Carrie Rochman, MD, an associate professor for the University of Virginia’s Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, has been named the department’s new Director of DEI Initiatives. Her appointment took effect on November 1.

Created in 2017, the UVA Radiology’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program is founded on the belief that are diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential values for improving healthcare across all levels. The program’s mission—established by Juliana Bueno, MD, the inaugural program director—is comprised of three major pillars: education, mentorship, and leadership opportunities.

The first seeds of the program were planted by the late Professor Eduard de Lange, MD, through the creation of the  Francesca and Eduard de Lange Diversity and Inclusion Fund, which provides a stipend to a resident in each class as they work to enhance diversity and inclusion in the department and the field of radiology.

Since the program’s creation, the initial idea grew and transformed to incorporate a multitude of initiatives that provide support and advocacy across different levels of medical training. These include: a Near-Peer Women’s Mentorship Group, based on the concept of residents acting as mentors to medical students; the incorporation of a designated curriculum on health care disparities into the radiology residency curriculum, based on national guidance from the Association of Academic Radiologists; and the creation of a 4th-Year Medical Student Scholarship Program that supports non-UVA medical students’ visiting 4-week rotations, which in collaboration with UVA’s GME office also incorporates leadership training in the topics of DEI.

The program also successfully advocated for the Medical Student Summer Research Program to allocate departmental funds for research projects in health care disparities — both increasing opportunities for medical students, and incentivizing radiology faculty to conceptualize ways of expanding services that benefit underserved communities and underrepresented groups.
