The 2022-23 academic year has been an extraordinary time at the School of Medicine, marked by inspiring growth and many shared accomplishments across all four mission areas. I am tremendously grateful for the faculty, trainees, learners, and team members who came together daily to serve our patients and one another with a mutual commitment to excellence that has brought us much to celebrate. I invite you to attend the upcoming State of the School address next week when I’ll highlight some of the amazing work we’ve done this year as we continue to transform health and inspire hope for all Virginians and beyond.
Our clinical care continues to receive national recognition with Newsweek naming our medical center No. 1 in Virginia and No. 42 in the country! US News & World Report ranked our Children’s Hospital No. 1 in Virginia for the third year in a row, and nine out of 10 pediatric specialties ranked top 50 in the country.
For the tenth consecutive year, our Graduate Medical Education program was re-accredited by the ACGME without a single citation, demonstrating the strength of our education mission. Our talented medical and graduate students continue to excel inside and outside the classroom as they work towards becoming the next generation of doctors and scientists, while also making a difference in our community by volunteering at nonprofits across Charlottesville.
With respect to research, I am proud to share the School of Medicine experienced an unprecedented 27% growth in our research portfolio in FY23, or a $60 million increase in funding — a number that is unheard of! But more importantly, our research has had a profound impact on improving the lives of patients and their families.
We’re also thrilled about the UVA Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology that should break ground by year’s end, setting the stage for a rich collaborative environment where our researchers can solve complex healthcare issues and innovate cutting-edge therapies for patients.
I couldn’t be more excited about all that is happening at UVA School of Medicine this year! Please join me at the State of the School Address on October 5 at 5 p.m. in the Claude Moore Medical Education Building Learning Studio as I expand on these year-end highlights and achievements and look to our future together.
With gratitude,
