computer and stethoscope The worldwide Microsoft CrowdStrike outage last Friday affected banks, hospitals, airlines, and other industries in what is being described as one of the most widespread IT outages in history. There were nearly 18,000 UVA Health System computers and 4,000 School of Medicine computers affected.

In the minutes and hours that followed, our School of Medicine and UVA Health information technology teams worked swiftly to determine network capabilities, organize Incident Command structures, and enable downtime procedures. The response was incredible – and it continued throughout the weekend and into this week as we have stabilized our technical operations. We are so grateful for the dedication and flexibility of team members during these challenging days and steadfast commitment to our mission and ASPIRE values.

Jeff Schroeder, Director of School of Medicine Information Services and Technology Solutions, extends special appreciation to the SOM-IT team for their sense of urgency, demonstrated initiative, and dedication to customer service and care. “The extra effort, long hours over the weekend, attention to detail, and persistence in mitigating this massive outage and getting the School of Medicine back to supporting our mission of providing excellent patient care is exemplary,” said Schroeder.
