Mitchell Rosner giving presentation

Dr. Rosner welcomes faculty and presenters to the UVA Health Finance Overview Town Hall.

At a presentation to UVA School of Medicine faculty on October 15, 2025, UVA Health and School of Medicine leaders shared a financial overview that highlighted the health system’s position and ongoing strategic investments. Presenters included Mitch Rosner, MD, CEO of UVA Health and EVP for Health Affairs; Stephanie Schnittger, CFO of UVA Health; Michael Marquardt, CFO of University Medical Center; Scott Just, MD, CEO of University Physicians Group; Erik Shannon, CEO of UVA Community Health; and Allison Holt, Associate Dean for Finance and Administration in the School of Medicine. Together, they described how UVA Health’s integrated academic and clinical enterprise supports its shared mission to transform health and inspire hope for all Virginians and beyond.

The presentation explained UVA Health’s interdependent economic model, which connects four mission areas — clinical care, research, teaching, and community health. Of the system’s $4.8 billion in FY2025 revenue, 85% is generated through clinical operations, while 15% supports the academic enterprise. More than $400 million flow among the University Medical Center, UVA Physicians Group, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Community Health, and the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, reinforcing the shared common missions of patient care, academic advancement, research, and community engagement.

Leaders also outlined three primary investment areas for University Medical Center: mission support (funding clinical, research, and teaching activities), capital expenditures (improving facilities, equipment, and technology), and strategic initiatives (supporting growth and operational efficiency). Examples include the South Tower project, radiology and perioperative system upgrades, and new ambulatory care strategies — all designed to enhance patient access and clinical capacity.

Looking ahead, presenters discussed opportunities and risks related to demographic shifts, workforce challenges, rising costs, and federal policy changes. Despite these pressures, UVA Health is well-positioned to navigate upcoming changes in the healthcare landscape.

Faculty are encouraged to view the recording of the full presentation for deeper insights into the organization’s financial model.
