It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Robert M. Epstein, MD, professor and chair emeritus of the School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Epstein passed away on July 23, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and dedication that profoundly impacted the field of anesthesiology.

Dr. Epstein joined the University of Virginia in 1972 from Columbia University when he was appointed professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. Over the 24 years he held this position, Dr. Epstein’s visionary leadership led to tremendous growth in both the size and reputation of the department, with many considering him the “father of the department.”

Dr. Epstein’s research led to the prediction and establishment of mutual effects of multiple gas interactions on rates of anesthetic uptake, or the “second gas effect.” This, in turn, led to the development of the first oxygen “fail safe” apparatus for inhalation anesthesia.

During his career, Dr. Epstein served as director and president of the American Board of Anesthesiology, editor of Anesthesiology, president of the UVA Health Services Foundation, president of the Association of University Anesthesiologists, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. He is remembered as a fantastic mentor, with many of his faculty members and residents going on to achieve esteemed leadership positions within the anesthesiology specialty, including two deanships and 12 department chairs.

Dr. Epstein held the Harold Carron Professorship in Anesthesiology starting in 1996. In honor of his exemplary service and impact, the Robert M. Epstein Professorship in Anesthesiology was established, currently held by Zhiyi Zuo, MD, PhD.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Epstein’s family and friends during this difficult time. His contributions to the School of Medicine and the field of anesthesiology will be remembered for generations to come. Read the full obituary to learn more about Dr. Epstein’s life and legacy.
