Department of Genome Sciences Celebrates National DNA With Local Middle School StudentsNational DNA Day, observed every year on April 25, commemorates two pivotal moments in scientific history: the discovery of the DNA double helix in 1953 and the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003.

To celebrate DNA Day 2025, faculty and trainees from the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine brought engaging, hands-on activities to students at Albemarle County’s Community Lab School. Over the course of the day, approximately 90 middle schoolers explored fundamental concepts in genetics, genomics, and biomedical science through a series of interactive sessions.

Each session encouraged students to ask questions, make connections, and think critically about the role of genome sciences in the world around them. The experience proved just as inspiring for the faculty and trainees, many of whom described the day as a highlight of their outreach work.

Session topics included:

  • What is Epigenomics? (presenter: Dr. Nathan Sheffield)
  • The Molecular Structure of DNA (presenters: Drs. Ani Manichaikul and Catherine Debban)
  • The Baby Alien Game: An Interactive Introduction to Genetics (presenters: Lucia Wagner and Saikat Bandyopadhyay)
  • DNA and Viruses (presenter: Patrick Hart)

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this year’s DNA Day outreach a success. These events reflect our deep commitment to public science education and to fostering curiosity about genome sciences at a young age,” said Charles Farber, PhD, chair of the Department of Genome Sciences. “Special thanks to Dr. Nathan Sheffield for leading the planning and coordination.”

The department also extends its thanks to the teachers and staff of the Community Lab School for their continued partnership.
