The Committee on Women in Medicine and Science (COWIMS) is honored to spotlight the work of Karen Duffy, AG-ACNP, as November’s Woman of the Month, in celebration of National Family Caregiving Month.

Karen Duffy is an adult gerontology nurse practitioner, specializing in providing care to older adults with acute, complex and often chronic health conditions. Her work includes assessment and diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management and patient and family education. In her role, Duffy collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, social workers, physical therapists and other health care professionals to ensure coordinated care.

In addition to her certification as an adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner, Duffy is board-certified as a gerontological nurse (RN) and a hospice and palliative care nurse (RN). She graduated valedictorian from her nursing class and received a Good Catch Recognition Award from UVA Health. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

As a nurse practitioner, Duffy works with Justin Mutter, MD, on the Virginia at Home (VaH) program, UVA’s primary care program for older adults who are homebound and have medically complex needs, with its mission to provide home-based medical care to those who desire to remain at home and age in place with dignity and community. The VAH program is UVA Health’s flagship home-based primary care program for older adults living with complex medical concerns and needs who are confined to their home, assisted living or memory care facility due to medical, functional and/or cognitive difficulties.

COWIMS thanks Karen Duffy for her compassionate care of our elderly population by bringing primary care directly to their homes and communities.
