Each September, we join the medical profession to commemorate Women in Medicine Month — a time to celebrate all women and highlight those who are making their mark toward our vision of being one of the nation’s leading public academic health systems and a best place to work.
To kick off this month of celebration, we are proud to announce that Forbes has listed UVA Health on its America’s 50 Best Employers for Women list. We were ranked No. 11 among health systems and No. 40 overall. This recognition reflects our efforts across the health system to invest in resources and initiatives that improve recruitment and retention for all, support women in the workplace, and nurture women’s careers through programs such as the School of Medicine’s Committee on Women in Medicine and Science. Our School of Medicine has made great strides in diversifying our workforce: more than 40% of faculty are women; and 50% of trainees, 52% of medical students, and 66% of PhD students are women.
Together, we strive to create equity across our four mission areas, where women are leading the charge in transforming patient care, driving innovative research, shaping education, and engaging with the diverse communities we serve. By recognizing the achievements of women across our entire organization, we reinforce our commitment to working as one UVA Health Team.
Throughout September, we will feature stories of women who have made or continue to make a significant impact on your lives and invite you to participate:
- Share your story about a woman in the field of medicine who has supported, mentored or inspired you during your healthcare career. Submissions will be considered for inclusion in Connect later this month.
As we celebrate women this month, we can’t miss this opportunity to highlight one of our own extraordinary leaders, School of Medicine Dean Melina Kibbe, MD, who serves as an incredible role model to so many.
