UVA Health electrophysiology team, led by Pamela Mason, MD, with the support of cardiac surgery and cardiac anesthesia, recently performed the first extravascular implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) in Virginia.

The Medtronic Extravascular ICD is a novel implantable defibrillator approved by the FDA to treat fast heart rhythms that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. The defibrillator lead is implanted beneath the sternum in the anterior mediastinal space. This location prevents vascular complications that traditional transvenous ICD lead can cause, which include infection, vascular occlusions and tricuspid regurgitation. This important advancement will benefit many patients as UVA Health endeavors to offer best-in-class healthcare to all Virginians and beyond.
