Taison Bell, MD, Appointed Acting Chair of the Department of Medicine

The School of Medicine is pleased to announce that Taison Bell, MD, MBA, has been appointed as the acting chair of the Department of Medicine, effective February 27, 2025.

Dr. Bell brings a wealth of experience and leadership to this role. He joined the Department of Medicine’s Divisions of Pulmonary and Critical Care and Infectious Diseases and International Health in 2017. He has held several leadership positions, including vice chair for faculty affairs in the Department of Medicine, co-chair of the University Physicians Group Investment Subcommittee, co-chair of the President’s Council on UVA-Community Partnerships, and director of the UVA Summer Medical Leadership Program.

Dr. Bell completed his undergraduate degree at UVA in African-American and African studies, and his medical degree at Columbia University. He then trained in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was a chief resident. After completing an infectious disease fellowship at the combined Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s Hospital program, he continued his training through a critical care fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. He earned his MBA from the UVA Darden School of Business in 2020.

Dr. Bell’s unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and research innovation will contribute to the department’s success during this time. Department Chair Mitch Rosner, MD, will serve as acting EVP for health affairs. We look forward to Dr. Bell’s leadership in the Department of Medicine as we continue advancing our mission to transform health and inspire hope for our patients and their families.
