Amanda Silva, MD
Amanda Silva, MD, an associate professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery, performed the first lymphatic-venous bypass at the UVA Health University Medical Center in July. This groundbreaking surgery, which most frequently treats breast-cancer related lymphedema, involves extremely high levels of magnification and requires powerful microscopes with laser imaging capabilities. The technique re-routes blocked lymphatics; these blockages are due to scar tissue related to breast surgery and radiation treatments. The outcome is a reduction in swelling, pain, and the risk of infection associated with lymphedema, which can improve patients’ function and well-being.
Dr. Silva’s leadership and collaboration both in the operating room and with our multidisciplinary lymphedema team is commendable. She is focused on helping build a comprehensive lymphedema program that includes strong cross-disciplinary collaboration across the School of Medicine and UVA Health University Medical Center, including the support of the OR team.
We’re fortunate to have an excellent multidisciplinary lymphedema team, including Alyssa Mixon, DO, an associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, who specializes in cancer rehabilitation and caring for patients with cancer-related lymphedema, and Sara Yoder, PT, DPT, CLT, a lymphedema therapist, and many other healthcare professionals dedicated to serving our patients.
