Kelly Curvin holds her daughter, Josie, who received a living donor liver transplant.

Right now, more than 20,000 people across the country are waiting for liver transplants, many of whom need them urgently. Living donors have the unique experience of donating to people who need immediate transplants, and as a result, having the opportunity to see the outcome of their selfless gift.

Christina Miller, a wife and mom of two kids from Elkton, Virginia, is one of those people. When Christina learned about Josie, a baby who needed a liver transplant, the call went straight to her heart. So, she made the life-saving decision to become a living donor. Following the 10-hour transplant surgery, Josie’s health improved almost immediately, and today, she’s a healthy, thriving toddler.

Fewer than 7,000 people a year agree to be living donors, however, the need is much greater and the reason UVA Health is striving to grow our living donor program.

Watch this patient video featuring Christina and Josie, and learn what you need to know about becoming a living donor.
