Helmy Siragy, MD, a professor of medicine and endocrinology at the UVA School of Medicine, is the guest editor of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences’ special issue focusing on neurohormones in cardiac fibrosis and heart failure. The journal is accepting manuscript submissions.

Heart failure is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Neurohormones, such as angiotensin II, endothelin, aldosterone, and catecholamines, play major roles in mediating cardiac inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, cardiac myositis, hypertrophy, fibrosis, and eventually leading to the development of heart failure. Recent data suggest that reducing the activity of the cardiac neurohormones with blockers of the renin–angiotensin system, endothelin-1 receptor, aldosterone, and adrenergic beta receptors improves heart failure outcomes.

This special issue will focus on the evolving knowledge about the role of neurohormones in cardiac fibrosis and heart failure.
