Nadia Holness (lt) and Sarah E. Ewald, PhD (rt)

Nadia Holness, a biomedical sciences graduate student, and her adviser Sarah Ewald, PhD, were awarded a 2022 Gilliam Fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The program provides awards to pairs of dissertation advisers and their graduate students based on the student’s potential for scientific leadership and the adviser’s commitment to building an inclusive and effective academic environment for all.  Each of the 51 adviser-student pairs receives an annual award of $53,000 for up to three years and joins a vibrant community which includes many students from populations historically underrepresented in science. This award is UVA’s Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BIMS) first Gilliam Fellowship.

Sarah Ewald, PhD, is an associate professor of microbiology, immunology and cancer biology and is also a member of the Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research. Her lab studies innate immune sensing, chronic inflammation and infection. Read more on Professor Ewald’s research interests.
