Data and Research Software Training Courses from the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library

August 15, 2022 by jta6n@virginia.edu

Join Health Sciences Library staff for a data science or research software workshop on R, SPSS, or Excel, all via Zoom. Review our roster of training opportunities here https://cal.hsl.virginia.edu/calendar/data/  Registration required.

R Training
Learn R, the popular programming language for statistical computing and graphics

Introduction to R
This workshop is directed towards participants who have little or no experience with statistical computing or programming. R is an open source language that can be used for a variety of computational purposes. This class will introduce R and RStudio in the context of its data analysis capabilities. Via interactive code-alongs, students will learn the basics of creating variables, using functions, accessing documentation, loading packages, importing data, and investigating a dataset. This session will be taught via Zoom: a link to the Zoom session will be sent in the confirmation and reminder emails.
Wed Aug 24 10:00AM – 12:00PM
Wed Sep 7 2:00PM – 4:00PM

Data Preparation in R
Data analysis involves a large amount of preparing, cleaning, and “munging” data to facilitate downstream data analysis. This workshop is designed for those with a basic familiarity with R who want to learn modern tools and techniques for data manipulation. Upon completing this lesson, participants will be able to use the dplyr package in R to effectively manipulate and conditionally compute summary statistics over subsets of a “big” dataset containing many observations. This session will be taught via Zoom: a link to the Zoom session will be sent in the confirmation and reminder emails.
Thu Aug 25 10:00AM – 12:00PM
Wed Sep 14 2:00PM – 4:00PM

Data Visualization in R
This workshop will cover fundamental concepts for creating effective data visualization using the popular R plotting package, ggplot2. We will review fundamental concepts for visually displaying quantitative information, such as using series of small multiples, avoiding “chart-junk,” and maximizing the data-ink ratio. We will cover the grammar of graphics in the ggplot2 package (geoms, aesthetics, stats, and faceting) to create beautiful plots layer-by-layer. Upon completing this lesson, learners will be able to use ggplot2 to explore high-dimensional datasets. This session will be taught via Zoom: a link to the Zoom session will be sent in the confirmation and reminder emails.
Wed Aug 31 10:00AM – 12:00PM
Wed Sep 21 2:00PM – 4:00PM

Data Wrangling in R
One of the most difficult tasks when conducting data analysis is combining disparate datasets into a single usable dataset. This workshop will provide participants with data cleaning and joining skills using functions from tidyverse packages. Specifically, participants will be able to reorganize and reshape datasets, clean messy datasets, and correctly merge datasets together. This session will be taught via Zoom: a link to the Zoom session will be sent in the confirmation and reminder emails.
Thu Sep 1 10:00AM – 12:00PM
Wed Sep 28 2:00PM – 4:00PM

SPSS
This workshop is geared to those with little to no experience with statistical programming and/or SPSS. By using interactive hands-on demonstrations and exercises, this workshop will familiarize participants with the tools necessary to use SPSS for data analysis. Participants will walkthrough topics ranging from loading data into SPSS, organizing and labeling data, manipulating and creating variables, and getting descriptive information from the data. This session will be taught via Zoom: a link to the Zoom session and SPSS software information will be sent in the confirmation and reminder emails. Prerequisites: SPSS (version 26 or later) installed and properly licensed.
Mon Sep 12 1:00PM – 3:00PM

Excel
New to Excel? Join us for short, “bite-sized” demonstrations of useful Excel function via Zoom. You can attend any or all of our “Excel Bites” the sessions: all are designed for beginners. Please register for each session to receive the Zoom link.

Excel Bites: navigation basics
Learn the basics of navigating your Excel spreadsheets, including Excel tables, sorting, filtering, hide/unhide, find and replace, and freeze panes.
Tue Sep 13 12:30PM – 1:00PM

Excel Bites: working with text
Gain techniques to work with text more efficiently such as Flash Fill to merge data, Text to Columns to split columns, and Conditional Formatting to select data.
Thu Sep 15 12:30PM – 1:00PM

Excel Bites: formulas and functions
Obtain a basic understanding how formulas work in Excel and how to find basic functions.
Tue Sep 20 12:30PM – 1:00PM

Excel Bites: simple merging using VLOOKUP
See how to use VLOOKUP to match data and pull it from one spreadsheet into another. We will also briefly discuss the power of XLOOKUP (available only for Excel for Microsoft 365).
Thu Sep 22 12:30PM – 1:00PM

Excel Bites: PivotTables
Learn about the functionality of Pivot Tables to explore and summarize your data.
Tue Sep 27 12:30PM – 1:00PM

Excel Bites: More PivotTables and PivotCharts
Explore additional PivotTable basic functions and gain an understanding of using PivotCharts to visualize data in a graph or chart.
Thu Sep 29 12:30PM – 1:00PM
