Leticia Beltran, a biophysics PhD candidate in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BIMS) at UVA School of Medicine, was highlighted in the journal Cell’s campaign “Faces of Cell” which aims to increase visibility for underrepresented scientists who have published in the journal. Leti is an author of the article entitled Spindle-shaped archaeal viruses evolved from rod-shaped ancestors to package a larger genome published in April 2022 in Cell. Leti is a Latinx and first-generation graduate who hopes to become a professor at an R1 institution and partner with underrepresented communities to create a diverse and inclusive lab environment. Her research interests include applying cryo-electrom microscopy to determine structures to high resolution and biophysical assays to understand biological systems. Leti is part of the Egelman Lab led by Edward H. Egelman, PhD, Harrison Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at University of Virginia.
