Chief of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Michael Nelson, MD, PhD, was appointed to serve on the Executive Committee of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the leading not-for-profit organization overseeing specialty board certification in the United States. ABMS is responsible for the creation of standards through 24 ABMS Member Boards. More than 940,000 physicians and medical specialists are certified by one or more of the ABMS Member Boards in one or more of 40 specialties and 88 subspecialties.
Dr. Nelson represents the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI) in this executive committee position. He has contributed his leadership skills to ABAI as a member of the Board of Directors (2011-2016), as Treasurer (2016-2018) and was named in 2019 as President and CEO.
Dr. Nelson has played a central role in facilitating the transformation of physician continuing board certification. In addition to his leadership of ABAI, he served on the national Vision Commission for Continuing Board Certification along with UVA’s Jann Balmer, PhD, RN, FACEHP, FAAN, leading to new ABMS standards for the 24 member boards spanning all medical specialties.
