Child Health Research Center’s 34th Annual Research Symposium Showcases Work Focused on Improving Children’s Lives

CHRC Research Day 2022The Child Health Research Center in the Department of Pediatrics hosted the 34th Annual Research Day Symposium on May 26, 2022 at UVA Children’s Battle Building. The annual event celebrates excellent scholarly research by Department of Pediatrics’ faculty and trainees including residents, medical fellows, medical students, graduate students, and undergraduates. There were 36 posters, three oral presentations, five trainee awards, a lifetime achievement award, and engaging discussion about research focused on improving the lives of children. Participants were excited the event was in-person again for the first time since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

James P. Nataro, MD, PhD, MBA, the Benjamin Armistead Shepherd Professor and Chair of Pediatrics, presented the keynote address entitled “Enteric Infection: The Question is the Answer.” More than 100 people attended the address and joined Dr. Nataro at UVA Children’s Battle Building to view and discuss research posters. He presented the Lifetime Achievement Award in Pediatric Science to Richard D. Stevenson, MD, Division Head, Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at the luncheon and the following awards to trainees:

  • Megan Elliott, Edwin and Mary Kendig Award for Pediatric Fellows, Gabapentin Use in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
    Jason P. Smith, 1st Place, Hiroko Nishimura Trainee Award, Using Natural Language Processing to Cluster Single Cell Omics
  • Philip Mollica, 2nd Place, Trainee Poster Award, Evaluating the Potential of a Chimeric Inhibitory Receptor to Address Cytokine Related Toxicities Seen in Patients Receiving CAR T Cell Therapy
  • Evan Rajadhaksha, 3rd Place, Trainee Poster Award, Gene Dysregulation in the Adult Kidney of a Murine Model of Preterm Birth May Provide a Link Between Low Nephron Number and Sodium Regulation
  • Josh Donovan, 4th Place, Trainee Poster Award, LTMK2 Activates Canonical TGF-B1 Signaling Pathway by Inhibiting PP1c

Prior to Research Day, the Child Health Research Center held its 10th annual Research Trainee Competition on May 13, 2022. Twelve trainees presented abstracts and the top three were selected to give oral presentations at Research Day on May 26. Congratulations to the following winners who presented their work:

  • Alex Martini, 2nd Place, Fate of the Foxd1 Progenitors Cells in the Developing Kidney Vasculature
  • Katye Herring, 3rd Place, Defining the Notch Proximitome in T Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
