The Center for RNA Science and Medicine recently hosted its first research retreat, bringing together faculty, researchers, and students from across UVA to explore groundbreaking developments in RNA research. Nearly 100 attendees participated in presentations and discussions that highlighted the critical role of RNA in a wide range of biological systems and medical applications. Researchers from over 40 UVA labs, representing multiple departments, shared insights and advances in this rapidly evolving field.

A highlight of the retreat was the student poster session, featuring posters that offered valuable glimpses into the latest RNA-focused research being conducted across the university.

The retreat also featured presentations from members of the Center’s executive committee, including Roger Abounader, MD, PhD; Muge Kuyumcu-Martinez, PhD; Anuradha Illendula, PhD; and Mariano Garcia-Blanco, MD, PhD. Each shared insights from their own work and spoke on the transformative potential of RNA science in the future of medicine.

This milestone event not only fostered interdisciplinary collaboration and sparked innovative ideas, but also celebrated the strength and vibrancy of UVA’s RNA research community.

Event organizers extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this event. The Center for RNA Science and Medicine offers special thanks to event sponsors: the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, UVA Cancer Center, Department of Pathology, and Department of Microbiology Immunology and Cancer, for their generous support in making this retreat possible.
