Hong Zhu, PhD, a professor of biostatistics in the Department of Public Health Sciences and director of UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Biostatistics Shared Resource, has been appointed to serve in the role of Statistician for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Central Institutional Review Board (Adult CIRB – Late Phase Emphasis), effective January 2025.

The mission of the NCI CIRB is to protect the rights and welfare of participants in cancer clinical trials. Institutions across the country rely on the CIRB’s national experts to ensure that clinical trials are reviewed efficiently and with the highest ethical and quality standards. The Adult CIRB – Late Phase Emphasis is tasked to review National Clinical Trials Network adult Phase 3 and Phase 2/3 studies.

Dr. Zhu is a nationally recognized biostatistician clinical trialist with methodology and implementation expertise in the design, conduct, monitoring, and analysis of all phases explanatory and pragmatic trials. She co-authored the book Design and Analysis of Pragmatic Trials (Chapman & Hall/CRC, 2023).
