Daniel Cox, PhD, was featured in the media coverage across Virginia and on TV stations nationally discussing a clinical trial for a non-medication approach to managing type 2 diabetes.
UVA Health is initiating clinical trials for an innovative approach to managing Type 2 diabetes that bypasses the need for medications or weight loss. “We teach people how to control their blood glucose,” said Daniel Cox, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and internal medicine.
Developed by Dr. Cox, the treatment enhances physical activity to help lower blood glucose levels. It also pinpoints foods that patients should avoid due to their potential to elevate blood glucose. “We encourage people to become more physically active after meals, walk their dog, go out for a walk with family members, do their outdoor chores, et cetera,” said Cox.
In the upcoming clinical trials, volunteers will have their blood glucose levels continuously monitored, allowing them to observe the connection between their physical activities, food choices, and glucose levels.
