A UVA School of Medicine study that found a spike in calls to U.S. poison centers involving psilocybin, or “magic mushrooms,” among adolescents and young adults after it was decriminalized in several cities and states has garnered widespread national news coverage. More than 150 TV stations and publications nationwide have covered the story since the study’s release in late February.
The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, was led by Christopher Holstege, MD, a professor of medicine and pediatrics at the UVA School of Medicine and director of the Blue Ridge Poison Center and first author Rita Farah, PharmD, MPH, PhD, the Blue Ridge Poison Center epidemiologist.
