Theme: Generative Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the landscape of health professions education. Learners and educators have engaged in generative AI to understand and/or explain difficult concepts and to draft documents such as letters of recommendation and personal statements relevant to their daily work. Examples such as these only scratch the surface of the potential offered by AI. As such, the relationship between AI and the future of medical education is our theme for the 2024 Innovation in Education Week at UVA School of Medicine.

In coordination with this theme, we are organizing a call for proposals to advance our school’s innovation in the educational application of AI. All SOM team members—faculty, staff, students, trainees—are invited to submit a proposal. We are seeking ideas likely to produce the greatest impact and those which are most feasible. The winner will be recognized at the Innovation in Education Week reception and awards ceremony on Wednesday February 28, 2024. The SOM education leadership team will partner with the winner to bring the idea to fruition.

The following should be included with each proposal:

  • Name of individual(s) proposing the idea (group proposals are welcome)
  • Email address and role(s) (i.e. staff, faculty, student, trainee) of submitter(s)
  • Description of idea (maximum of 250 words)

Deadline: Proposals are due by February 1, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. All submissions will be reviewed by an ad hoc committee assembled through the Center for Excellence in Education.

Notifications will be provided to all who submitted proposals by February 14, 2024.
