Sula Mazimba, MD, an associate professor of medicine, and a team of UVA cardiologists met with five clinicians from Zambia last week to help them gain experience in cardiovascular care. Dr. Mazimba, who is from Zambia, says he hopes the ongoing partnership with Zambian clinicians will help them be able to perform complex heart surgeries in the future. He says Zambia has the infrastructure and knowledgeable clinicians, but they lack the necessary experience to perform complicated procedures. The program with UVA helps “bridge the gap.”
