Congratulations to the graduates of the 36th Leadership in Academic Matters (LAM) fall 2023 program. The fall program began September 11, 2023, with a cohort of 26, represented by seven schools, 21 departments and the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. Twelve weekly half-day sessions were conducted over the course of several months and were facilitated by experts in academic leadership. Meetings were held in a beautiful meeting barn and the main house on the Morven Farm property, a 2,913-acre estate just south of Charlottesville.
Faculty, across many disciplines, came together and engaged in learning opportunities focused on a variety of topics including managing change, building and managing teams, difficult conversations, developing successful networks, and finding work/life balance in a dynamic and growing career. For the final session on December 4, 2023, participants spent the morning learning and discussing the topic Refection, Insight, Action: Applying LAM in My Leadership. The session was led by Jennie Knight, PhD, Associate Vice President for Faculty Development, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. During this session the cohort reviewed the various dimensions of emotional intelligence to include self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness and relationship management. Participants synthesized what they have learned about themselves throughout the LAM sessions and through the various assessment tools. The cohort was encouraged to develop strategies for employing this knowledge. The session concluded with final thoughts and a lunch ceremony.

LAM is a faculty development opportunity focused on supporting, inspiring, and rewarding those who, in these myriad roles, have demonstrated leadership characteristics and future potential. This program began in 2004 when Sharon Hostler, MD, first came on board to manage faculty development efforts in the School of Medicine. In 2009, when Dr. Hostler became the Vice Provost for Faculty Development for the entire University, the program was extended to faculty from all the schools at UVA.
Typically, we have a cohort of 30 faculty and administrators, half from UVA Health/SOM and half from across Grounds. Bringing faculty into the program from other schools has resulted in a much richer experience for both groups. Generally, the LAM program is held twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. To date, over 981 faculty and administrators have graduated from the LAM program.
