Dana Redick, MD

The Committee on Women in Medicine and Science (COWIMS) is celebrating Pride Month this June and is proud to honor the contributions of Dana Redick, MD, (pronouns: she/her), an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

As a UVA gynecologist, Dr. Redick’s efforts have advanced inclusive healthcare practices, fostering a supportive environment and promoting how to deliver LGTBQ+ friendly healthcare. She has opportunities to mentor UVA medical students in many roles including as the qMD faculty advisor and as assistant student affairs dean. She also serves as curricular thread leader on Sexual Health/LBGTQ+ issues.

“I try to teach our staff and students about the trust and vulnerability that goes into taking care of people especially for LBGTQ+ patients, who like other marginalized populations have faced discrimination in many facets of their lives from their birth families, to religious communities, to workplaces, and even in health care. As a provider, we know the healthcare system, so we can help people navigate it and be advocates for themselves. We can help patients get to the provider best suited for their needs. To do this well – we need to listen and understand each person’s unique story as well as know the resources available in the community. I strive to do this and hope I teach and model this for our students and my colleagues,” states Dr. Redick.

COWIMS thanks Dr. Redick for the work she does by implementing best practices and demonstrating clinical excellence and supporting the University of Virginia LGBTQ+ community. COWIMS encourages team members to check out some of the UVA sponsored Pride month events in June.
