The University of Virginia’s Center for Advanced Medical Analytics (CAMA) was established in 2016, modeled after a National Science Foundation scientific center to fuel collaboration and accelerate the clinical translation of data-driven technologies. Founded by UVA cardiologist Randall Moorman, MD, CAMA has grown to span multiple UVA schools and disciplines, supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health, industry partners, and philanthropy.

Today, CAMA continues to advance data-driven innovation in patient care and is entering an exciting new chapter. Following Dr. Moorman’s retirement from the School of Medicine, Brynne Sullivan, MD, was named the next director of CAMA and appointed the Randall and Liza Moorman Associate Professor of Advanced Medical Analytics.

Dr. Sullivan is a neonatologist and NIH-funded physician-scientist in the Department of Pediatrics. While CAMA’s core staff now reside within the Department of Pediatrics, researchers from at least five School of Medicine departments as well as colleagues from the Schools of Data Science, Nursing, Engineering, and Education continue to collaborate through CAMA’s interdisciplinary meetings and initiatives.

“At CAMA, our goal is to bridge disciplines to bring AI and predictive monitoring from the computer lab to the bedside,” said Dr. Sullivan. “We’re excited to continue fostering partnerships that turn innovation into translational insights for patient care.”

AI research symposium

Frontiers in Clinical AI Symposium

CAMA recently partnered with the UVA Office of the Vice President for Research to host the annual Frontiers in Clinical AI Symposium, where clinicians, engineers, industry experts, and data scientists convened to explore cutting-edge applications of artificial intelligence in medicine.

The symposium featured lightning talks and poster presentations showcasing advances in clinical time-series analytics, imaging, medical education, and implementation science. Representing CAMA, Dr. Sullivan delivered “Turning Data into Clinical Insights,” highlighting how multidisciplinary collaboration is transforming raw physiologic data into actionable tools that support clinicians at the bedside.

The poster and networking session hosted by the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, featured digital poster screens, aligning with the symposium’s focus on advancing technology while reducing paper waste.

Looking Ahead

CAMA continues to serve as a hub for collaboration across UVA, supporting research, fostering innovation, and advancing the clinical application of AI and predictive analytics. Faculty, trainees, and collaborators interested in exploring data-science approaches or seeking support for data-driven healthcare projects are encouraged to connect with CAMA.
