iTHRIV scholars and leadership
The integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV) Scholars Program recently celebrated the start of its ninth year. The all-virtual mentored career development program supports competitively appointed faculty from multiple institutions across Virginia for two years—and beyond—in their journey toward independence as clinical and translational researchers.
iTHRIV Scholars, both current and alumni, along with program leadership—many of whom had never met in person before—gathered for lunch on UVA Grounds in July to enjoy a rare opportunity for literal face time with one another, celebrating accomplishments and strengthening relationships. During this in-person meeting, program leaders shared a few Scholar statistics that help demonstrate both program and Scholar success:
- The program has supported 49 Scholars in 8 cohorts.
- Scholars represent a wide range of disciplines from 19 departments in nine schools and colleges across three institutions (UVA, Virginia Tech, Carilion Clinic).
- More than two-thirds of iTHRIV Scholars who are no longer under the program-stipulated protected time have been awarded independent funding, with many additional grants in development.
- Graduates of the program have been awarded more than $46 million in extramural funding to date.
- iTHRIV Scholars have published more than 735 publications since their appointment to the program.
“We couldn’t be prouder of the early-career faculty we support. Without them, our program wouldn’t be the same. Their perseverance and determination are inspiring, and it’s been an honor to work closely with so many of them as they pursue their long-term goals,” said Amy Harrigan, iTHRIV Scholars Program manager.
iTHRIV Scholars meet weekly during the two-year program for a variety of activities designed to support their career development. Program support includes mock study sections, extramural proposal development resources, mentorship training, and team science activities.
Through its support of promising faculty and its commitment to interdisciplinary research, the iTHRIV Scholars Program has been a vital component of our institutions’ efforts to develop future research leaders. The success of the program reflects a strong foundation in the translational research of our faculty.
“The impact of the research from these fantastic scholars is profound. We look forward to seeing how human health is improved in dramatic ways because of the contributions of these faculty,” said Jason Papin, PhD, iTHRIV Scholars Program director.
