The Department of Surgery rose to No. 15 from No. 17 nationally in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, according to the newly released Blue Ridge rankings. UVA has the highest-ranked department of surgery in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia region.
The Blue Ridge rankings are based on U.S. NIH funding awarded to institutions, departments, and investigators over the federal fiscal year. The Department of Surgery’s ranking increased from 32 ($5.95M) in 2023 to 17 ($9.8M) in 2024 to 15 ($13.4M) in 2025.
While this is just one of many metrics, the Blue Ridge ranking is nationally recognized and illustrates the strength of our research program as compared to other surgery departments across the country. This milestone reflects the sustained dedication of our faculty, trainees, research teams, and administrators, and the collaborative culture that drives our research enterprise forward.
