{"id":2436,"date":"2022-03-25T14:07:17","date_gmt":"2022-03-25T19:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.med.virginia.edu\/mindfulness\/?p=2436"},"modified":"2022-03-25T14:07:17","modified_gmt":"2022-03-25T19:07:17","slug":"research-update-35","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.med.virginia.edu\/mindfulness\/2022\/03\/25\/research-update-35\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mindfulness Training for Children with ADHD and Their Parents<\/p>\n<p>Researchers in Spain conducted a randomized controlled trial to determine whether a mindfulness-based program can improve ADHD symptoms, associated problems, executive functions, and family functioning. The participants included 30 children (9\u201314\u2009years old) with an ADHD diagnosis and their parents.\u00a0 They were randomized together into two groups, a mindfulness group (n\u2009=\u200915) and a wait-list control group (n\u2009=\u200915). The mindfulness intervention was MYmind, an 8-week program for children and their parents.\u00a0 The children\u2019s sessions were 60 minutes and the parents\u2019 sessions 90 minutes each.\u00a0 The children performed exercises to focus and improve their attention, self-control, and body awareness. Participants were assessed at three time periods: pre-intervention, post-intervention, and at 6-month follow-up. After the program, parents reported a decrease in parenting stress and improvements in parenting styles.
