The division (&#8220;GI&#8221;) and its clinical arm, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/services\/digestive-health\">UVA Digestive Health Center<\/a><\/strong>, has been expanding its clinical services and garnering awards for quality of care and community outreach. Here are some high points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>December 2016: <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.uvahealth.com\/2016\/12\/01\/uva-named-national-pancreas-foundation-center-for-pancreatitis-care\/\">National Pancreas Foundation (NPF) designates UVA as an NPF Pancreatitis Center<\/a><\/strong>, in recognition of the high quality of its patient care in this area. The new center is led by GI&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/Daniel-Strand\">Daniel Strand, MD.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>July 2017: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsplex.com\/content\/news\/UVA-Health-System-welcomes-new-Endoscopy-Center-433854903.html\"><strong>UVA Endoscopy Monroe Lane opens<\/strong><\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>The division&#8217;s new endoscopy facility on Monroe Lane, under medical director <a href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/bryan-g-sauer\">Bryan Sauer, MD<\/a>, offers upper endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures, along with\u00a0improved access to advanced treatments, in a new state-of-the-art facility with 23,000-square feet of space. The facility features five new procedure rooms and 20 new prep\/recovery rooms.<\/li>\n<li>The new<strong> Motility Lab<\/strong> at the Monroe facility,\u00a0directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/jeanetta-w-frye\">Jeanetta Frye, MD<\/a>, has expanded capacity and equipment to facilitate advanced testing [see\u00a0sidebar].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>August 2017: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.uvahealth.com\/2017\/08\/08\/u-s-news-world-report-ranks-uva-no-1-hospital-virginia\/\"><strong>U.S. News &amp; World Report recognizes UVA Digestive Health as one of four \u201chigh performing\u201d specialties<\/strong><\/a> at the UVA Health System &#8212; placing it among the top 10 percent nationally in its specialty area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>October 2017: <a href=\"https:\/\/news.med.virginia.edu\/medicinematters\/uvasomrestriction\/public\/2017\/11\/06\/james-scheiman-md-is-gastroenterologys-new-division-chief\/\">Gastro-Hep welcomes\u00a0James M. Scheiman, MD, as its new division chief.<\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/uvahealth.com\/findadoctor\/profile\/james-m-scheiman\">Dr. Scheiman<\/a> joined UVA from the University of Michigan, where he served with distinction on the Division of Gastroenterology faculty for more than 25 years, in a variety of leadership positions. Department of Medicine chair Mitch Rosner called Dr. Scheiman an &#8220;accomplished clinician, clinical investigator and educator,&#8221; and said he would &#8220;help lead the division on its continued path to excellence in all of our mission areas.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>October 2017: <a href=\"https:\/\/news.med.virginia.edu\/medicinematters\/uvasomrestriction\/public\/2017\/11\/06\/uva-gastroenterology-wins-2017-scopy-award-from-acg\/\">GI Wins 2017 &#8220;SCOPY&#8221; Award from American College of Gastroenterology<\/a><\/strong>. What does that involve?<\/em><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399\"> GI&#8217;s Motility Lab, which is housed in the new Monroe Endoscopy facility,\u00a0performs a full spectrum\u00a0of\u00a0diagnostic tests to assess GI motility disorders. As director, I work with our nursing staff and my colleagues, in particular Dr. James Mann, to ensure that the lab is incorporating the latest testing and equipment for motility-related disorders. In some, testing\u00a0standards are evolving quickly.<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n<strong>Q: What kinds of tests does the Motility Lab perform?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399\"> Patients come to us with a variety of complaints: constipation, diarrhea, bloating\/gas, reflux, and dysphagia, among others. Specialized tests &#8212;\u00a0including esophageal manometry, which measures\u00a0muscle function in the esophagus, and breath tests for evaluating conditions like small intestine bacterial overgrowth\u00a0and lactose, fructose, or fructans malabsorption\u00a0&#8212; help gastroenterologists pinpoint the specific causes of gastrointestinal disorders, leading to more targeted treatment.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #333399\"> <em>Q: Tell us about your recent training\u00a0experiences.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399\"> I went to Vanderbilt University, where I did my M.D., for further training with Michael Vaezi, MD, PhD, an esophagologist. I also visited the Medical College of Georgia&#8217;s Augusta University, and I will be making a return visit.
