Over the last year the Department of Medicine launched a new initiative, “Women in Internal Medicine Network<\/strong><\/a>” (WIMN)<\/strong>, which focuses on supporting the professional growth of DOM’s women faculty members and trainees. Co-chaired by Division of Gastroenterology faculty members\u00a0Jeanetta Frye, MD<\/a><\/strong>, and Anne Tuskey, MD<\/a><\/strong>, with additional leadership provided by DOM’s director of education Joy Hilton<\/strong>, the group\u00a0sponsored a kick-off event in January 2016 that featured a panel discussion on work-life balance. More than 30 DOM women — faculty, fellows and residents — participated.<\/p>\n

Follow-up meetings were held during the spring, with a similar level of participation. An\u00a0April\u00a0meeting featured an exploration of mentoring with Dorothe Bach<\/strong> of UVA’s Center for Teaching Excellence.\u00a0Peggy Plews-Ogan, MD<\/strong> (Division\u00a0\u00a0of General, Geriatric, Palliative & Hospital Medicine) and Susan Pollart, MD <\/strong>(SOM’s\u00a0Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development) led the follow-up discussion.<\/p>\n

In June, UVA Theatre Department faculty member Denise Stewart <\/strong>facilitated a session on wellness and work\/life balance; and \u00a0Christina Surawicz, MD<\/strong>, past president of the American College of Gastroenterology, spoke on “Challenges for Women in Academic Medicine.”<\/p>\n

During the 2016-2017 academic year, WIMN will sponsor ongoing meetings and a Grand Rounds presentation. It also aims to establish a grant to support women faculty members at the early stages of their research careers.<\/p>\n
