Message From the Office of the Chair – February 2026

Taison Bell

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

February is here, which means budget season is officially upon us. While many of you were navigating snow-covered roads, rescheduled clinics, and the logistical gymnastics of major winter storms, our leadership teams were also deep in spreadsheets, forecasts, and conversations about how best to position the Department for the year ahead. Neither effort is particularly glamorous, and both require real work—thank you for showing up through it all.

I want to acknowledge the strain this past month has placed on schedules, staffing, childcare, commutes, and patience. The resilience, flexibility, and professionalism across the Department have been on full display, and they are not going unnoticed. Behind the scenes, substantial work is underway to steward our resources responsibly while protecting our core missions of patient care, education, and discovery.

This month’s Medicine Matters reflects that same energy. You’ll find highlights of achievements, awards, a remarkable milestone from our Lung Transplant Program, and a snapshot of the extraordinary work happening in our Endocrinology Division.

As always, thank you for what you do—for one another and for our patients. Spring will come. The budget will be submitted. And yes, the snow mounds will melt someday. My guess is early-March.

My Best to You,
Taison Bell, MD, MBA
Interim Chair, Department of Medicine
