Dear Friends and Colleagues,
As we begin a new year, I want to thank each of you for the dedication and compassion you bring to the Department of Medicine every day. January always offers a moment to pause—reflecting on the year behind us while looking ahead with renewed purpose.
We are entering 2026 with even more transitions. Across the University and the Commonwealth, new leadership is taking shape—from a new University President to a new Governor—alongside continued change within academic medicine more broadly. While transitions can bring uncertainty, they also create opportunity: to clarify our priorities, strengthen our partnerships, and stay focused on what matters most—our patients, learners, and one another.
This month’s newsletter reflects the strength of our Department during moments like these. We are proud to feature the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health, whose work exemplifies clinical excellence, innovative research, global partnership, and outstanding training. You’ll also find an impressive array of awards, promotions, grants, publications, and national recognition across our divisions—clear evidence of the extraordinary talent and commitment within our community.
As we head into the coming days, I also want to encourage everyone to take care and stay safe with the winter weather our area expects. Please prioritize your safety and look out for one another.
Thank you for all you do to support our mission and each other. I wish you a safe start to the year and continued momentum in the months ahead.
With gratitude and best wishes,
Taison Bell, MD, MBA
