Dear Friends and Colleagues,
This month’s DOM newsletter highlights the tremendous breadth of work happening across the Department of Medicine, with a focus on the Division of General Internal Medicine. Inside, you’ll find updates on innovative clinical programs, expanding educational initiatives, and exciting research that reflect the division’s mission to provide outstanding patient care while training the next generation of physicians.
You’ll read about new approaches to opioid use disorder and chronic pain management through the UMA Office-Based Opioid Treatment program, the opening of an expanded geriatrics clinic to meet the needs of a rapidly growing older population, and a new geriatrics trauma consult service improving outcomes for hospitalized seniors. The division’s palliative care team is collaborating across specialties to bring advanced symptom management to patients with complex pulmonary disease. At the same time, faculty continue to advance research in areas such as cancer-related pain treatment and sickle cell disease care. Beyond the division spotlight, this issue celebrates major NIH grant awards, national recognitions, and impactful publications across multiple divisions—capturing the energy and commitment that define our department.
Lastly, I’ll add a quick personal aside: UVA’s Benefits Open Enrollment for 2026 will run from October 6 to 17, 2025. The window is short, and I will neither confirm nor deny having missed the deadline a couple of times since my arrival here—so don’t let it sneak up on you! This is your opportunity to review and select benefits for the coming year, so take a moment now to plan ahead.
Please explore the updates below and join me in recognizing the remarkable accomplishments of our colleagues who continue to advance patient care, discovery, and education every day.
My Best to You,
Taison D. Bell, MD, MBA
