Message from the Office of the Chair – July 2025

Taison BellDear Friends and Colleagues,

July brings renewal, reflection, and resolve. Amid ongoing instability, from President Ryan’s resignation to concerns over potential federal cuts to Medicaid, food assistance, and federal research funding. Yet what continues to uplift me is how our department rises to the occasion and does outstanding work.

In this issue, we highlight the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, a highly active division renowned for its excellence in clinical programs and education. Please take a moment to learn about the division and its amazing people.

We’re also inspired to welcome our new cohort of residents and fellows, including our newly appointed chief residents. Their energy, enthusiasm, and fresh perspectives are already enhancing our teaching programs and patient care. I look forward to seeing how they will shape the future of our department.

I also want to congratulate Dr. Coleen McNamara (Cardiology) and Dr. Mohan “Mo” Nadkarni (General Medicine) on receiving the University’s highest honor—the Thomas Jefferson Award. Their transformative contributions to research and clinical service exemplify our department’s spirit and dedication.

Despite external challenges, your excellence in patient care, research, education, and mentorship remains our brightest beacon. Thank you all for your continued dedication and leadership.

My best to you,
Taison Bell, MD, MBA
Acting Chair, Department of Medicine
