Message From the Chair – January 2020

It was just about ten years ago that I assumed the position of Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine. At that time, I was a nervous wreck trying to navigate the finances, human resources and intricacies of a large department. Well, that is still true but I have learned a lot in the past decade. Perhaps, the most important lesson which I see every day is that what matters most is the people in the Department. Time and time again, it is our faculty, staff, and trainees who demonstrate their selfless devotion to excellence and caring for our community. These are the small gestures of kindness to the development of community outreach programs, as a Department we are doing amazing things that bring us together and serve others.

In addition, it is also incredible to see our growth in the past decade:
• We have increased our faculty size by close to 100 new hires
• We have increased clinical revenue by 3-5% per year and we will likely hit over 1,000,000 work RVUs soon
• We have published over one peer-reviewed journal article per working day over the past 10 years
• We have increased extramural funding by over 10%
• We have won the Mulholland Award as the best teaching Department for medical students nine out of the ten past years.

There are so many other memorable and important events but I will just say thank you for all of your support and I am so honored to work on your behalf. Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year.
