With a renewed focus on our mission of developing passionate leaders focused on excellence who provide innovative and compassionate clinical care while advancing the field through research and education, Gastroenterology and Hepatology continues to grow and expand its recognition regionally, nationally and internationally. We were recognized by the US News and World report rankings as a top 50 specialty (35), reflecting the hard work of our dedicated faculty and staff.
Our renewed focus on customer service has led to improvements in productivity, and we continue to focus on recruiting the best and brightest to join our group. Esteban Figueroa, MD, currently our chief fellow, will join our IBD group next year, and we intend to expand both the faculty and the portfolio of clinical trials in this area with exciting new clinical innovations and a renewed vigor seeking national prominence.
Our Hepatology groups continues their cutting-edge work in coagulation in liver disease and management of gastric varices. Active efforts to initiate novel investigator-initiated trials in this area will lead to grant submissions and expansion of the international recognition of this strong team of clinical investigators. We plan to add an additional transplant hepatologist in the next academic year from a strong list of applicants recognizing the expansion of liver transplantation at UVA. Our tradition of excellence in education has be exemplified by the receipt of the Harrison Distinguished Teaching Associate Professorship in Medical Education Chair by Neeral Shah, MD chosen by the UVA Academy of Educators.
Our interventional endoscopists remain at the cutting edge, offering the most novel and Innovative care not only in the region but across the country and have grown in both research and clinical innovation. Our research efforts in colon cancer screening is expanding under Cindy Yoshida, MD’s direction and has received recognition by the American College of Gastroenterology. Our long term goal is to expand the section and diversify both our clinical and research portfolio on our way to top 25 recognition! ~James Scheiman, MD

Our strong focus on quality was acknowledged by Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program by ASGE.
Hepatology continues their cutting-edge work in coagulation in liver disease and management of gastric varices and led an international conference on the topic September 2019 in the Netherlands. Active efforts to initiate novel investigator-initiated trials in this area with grant submissions are in preparation.
Dr Anne Tuskey named ACG Governor and co-director of regional course in Williamsburg.
Liver transplantation continues to grown and we are regional leader in volumes.
The motility program has expanded under Dr Jeanetta Fyre’s effort with expansion into industry/academic clinical research partnership.
International outreach: Dr Bryan Sauer and UVA staff have set up an endoscopy unit in Guatemala.
