2019 marked 50 years for the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Virginia, started by Dr Gerald Mandell in 1969. We had the opportunity to come together on October 7, with about 100 former and current faculty, fellows, and staff, and heard talks ranging from the history of the early days to the latest advances. View additional photos from the event as well as video with the attached links on the next page (password for the video: UVAID50TH).
Other noteworthy events for 2019 included Dr Scheld receiving the IDSA Fleming Award for Lifetime Achievement, Dr Hayden receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from ISIRV, Jae Shin receiving his K08, Bill Petri and Sean Moore receiving an investment for a Trans-University Microbiome Initiative, the arrival of Dr Kosek and Pablo Yori, the launch of the OPAT system by Dr Eby, and I am certainly forgetting many other achievements, not to mention all of our usual daily activities!
We are looking forward to an even brighter 2020! ~Eric Houpt, MD
