2019 marked 50 years for the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Virginia, started by Dr Gerald Mandell in 1969. We had the opportunity to come together on October 7, with about 100 former and current faculty, fellows, and staff, and heard talks ranging from the history of the early days to the latest advances. Other noteworthy events for 2019 included Dr Scheld receiving the IDSA Fleming Award for Lifetime Achievement, Dr Hayden receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from ISIRV, Jae Shin receiving his K08, Bill Petri and Sean Moore receiving an investment for a Trans-University Microbiome Initiative, the arrival of Dr Kosek and Pablo Yori, the launch of the OPAT system by Dr Eby, and I am certainly forgetting many other achievements, not to mention all of our usual daily activities!

INFECTIOUS DISEASES HIGHLIGHTS & ACHIEVEMENTS
The ID Division 50th Anniversary celebration in October, was also marked by the creation of the Brian Wispelwey Fellowship fund, catalyzed by a generous gift from Drs Bill and Ann Petri.
Dr Rebecca Dillingham’s PositiveLinks Mobile Health intervention was recognized by CDC to meet Best Practices criteria for linkage to, retention in, and re-engagement in HIV care (LRC).
Dr Michael Scheld received the Alexander Fleming Award for Lifetime Achievement from the IDSA.
Dr Frederick Hayden received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Influenza and other Respiratory Virus Diseases (ISIRV).
Dr Jae Shin was awarded a K08 grant: Aging and Clostridium difficile infection: interplay of microbiota and host response.
Drs Bill Petri and Sean Moore (Pediatric GI) – have been awarded $5 million from the UVA Strategic Investment Fund for their Trans-University Microbiome Initiative (TUMI).
Dr Bill Petri was awarded the Bean Kean Medal by the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, awarded to a clinician or educator for their dedication to clinical tropical medicine and their impact on training.
Dr Bill Petri awarded the Walter Reed Distinguished Achievement Award by the UVA Medical Alumni Association.
