Gastroenterology Has a New Chief Onboard

James M. Scheiman, MD, joined the Department of Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as chief in October 2017. He came to UVA from the University of Michigan, where he received his undergraduate and medical degrees as well as advanced training in internal medicine and gastroenterology.

Dr. Scheiman was a member of the U-M faculty in the Division of Gastroenterology for more than 25 years, serving, among other roles, as director of its Advanced Endoscopy Training Program. He established the first endoscopic ultrasound program in the state of Michigan, which has become nationally recognized for its productivity in clinical care and research. He also served as the GI lead for U-M’s Multidisciplinary Pancreatic Cancer Destination Program, conducting research on the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Other areas of interest and expertise include the effects of aspirin/NSAIDS on the GI tract; acid-related disorders; and economic analyses of health care.

As the UVA Division of Gastroenterology expands its clinical footprint in endoscopy, Dr. Scheiman’s experienced leadership will serve the division well. In welcoming Dr. Scheiman to UVA, DOM chair Mitch Rosner said: “Dr. Scheiman is an accomplished clinician, clinical investigator and eduator who will help lead the division on its continued path to excellence in all of our mission areas.”
