William R. Jarvis, MD, is president of Jason and Jarvis Associates, consultants in medicine, epidemiology and public health. Dr. Jarvis served for 22 years as chief of the Epidemiology Branch of the Hospital Infectious Program (now called the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Following his tenure at the CDC, he served for a year as director of the Office of Extramural Research at the National Center for Infectious Diseases, before starting his own consulting practice.

Dr. Jarvis has served as president of both the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and as editor of the SHEA journal Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology. He is the author of over 450 journal articles and 50 book chapters.
