Overnight Closed Loop Control Improves Glycemic Control in a Multicenter Study of Adults with Type 1 Diabetes
Authors: Sue A. Brown, Marc D. Breton, Stacey M. Anderson, Laura Kollar, Patrick Keith-Hynes, Carol J. Levy, David W. Lam, Camilla Levister, Nihat Baysal, Yogish C. Kudva, Ananda Basu, […], Boris P. Kovatchev
In: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism 2017 Jun 28. doi: 10.1210/jc.2017-00556. [Epub ahead of print]
Significance: “This study demonstrates the effective use of closed-loop control in improving time in target range over 24 hours and decreasing the chance of hypoglycemia while simultaneously lowering glucose variability even if the closed-loop control system is only used at night,” according to Dr. Brown in Endocrine Today.

Derivation and validation of a universal vital assessment (UVA) score: a tool for predicting mortality in adult hospitalised patients in sub-Saharan Africa
Authors: Christopher C. Moore, Riley Hazard, Kacie J. Saulters, John Ainsworth, Susan A. Adakun, Abdallah Amir, Ben Andrews, Mary Auma, Tim Baker, Patrick Banura, John A. Crump, Martin P. Grobusch, Michaëla A.M. Huson, Shevin T. Jacob, Olamide D. Jarrett, John Kellett, Shabir Lakhi, Albert Majwala, Martin Opio, Matthew P. Rubach, Jamie Rylance, W. Michael Scheld, John Schieffelin, Richard Ssekitoleko, India Wheeler, Laura E. Barnes
In: BMJ Global Health 2017;2:e000344. Published on-line 28 Sept. 2017. DOI: 10.1136/bmjgh-2017-000344
Significance: “We identified predictors of in-hospital mortality irrespective of the underlying condition(s) in a large population of hospitalised patients in sub-Saharan Africa and derived an internally validated universal vital assessment (UVA) score to assist clinicians in risk-stratifying patients for in-hospital mortality. The UVA score could help improve patient triage in resource-limited environments and serve as a standard for mortality risk in future studies.”

Title: Microbiome-mediated neutrophil recruitment via CXCR2 and protection from amebic colitis

Authors: Koji Watanabe, Carol A. Gilchrist, Md Jashim Uddin, Stacey L. Burgess, Mayuresh M. Abhyankar, Shannon N. Moonah, Zannatun Noor, Jeffrey R. Donowitz, Brittany N. Schneider, Tuhinur Arju, Emtiaz Ahmed, Mamun Kabir, Masud Alam,  [ … ], William A. Petri Jr.

In: PLOS Pathogens; published on-line 17 Aug 2017.

Significance: “This study is of fundamental importance in amebiasis research for the discovery of a mechanism of microbiome-mediated resistance to amebiasis via neutrophil trafficking to the gut. The work is importantly of broad interest in infectious diseases and immunology for the discovery that neutrophil-mediated protection can be disturbed by dysbiosis.”
