A joint MGR/Medical Center Hour event celebrates the renaming of Jordan Hall to Pinn Hall in honor of Dr. Vivian Pinn, a 1967 graduate of UVA School of Medicine — where she was the only woman and only African-American in her class — and founding director of the NIH’s Office of Research on Women’s Health.
In celebrating Dr. Pinn and her legacy, the focus will be on current issues of fair and full access among African American women and other underrepresented minorities to medical education and healthcare services. What can healthcare providers, medical educators and related institutions learn from Dr. Pinn, to ensure that her legacy endures?
Over the course of her career, Dr. Pinn taught at Harvard and Tufts (where she also served as assistant dean of student and minority affairs), and chaired the Department of Pathology at Howard University’s College of Medicine. Since retiring from the NIH, Pinn has continued to work as a senior scientist emerita at NIH’s Fogarty International Center. Dr. Pinn is also an active presence in student life at Pinn College. Named in her honor, Pinn College is one of four UVA School of Medicine colleges.
In addition to Dr. Pinn, speakers at this event include Louis W. Sullivan, MD, the 17th U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and President Emeritus of Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, and Danielle Oliver, a fourth-year student in the Generalist Scholars program at UVA School of Medicine.
Co-presented with the Department of Medicine and the Generalist Scholars Program, in conjunction with UVA’s dedication of Pinn Hall and the UVA medical students’ celebration of Primary Care Week.
