MGR | Elizabeth M. Gaughan, MD – Multidisciplinary Approach to Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Toxicity Management

Dr. Elizabeth Gaughan is an assistant professor in UVA’s Division of Hematology and Oncology. D. Gaughan completed her MD at Georgetown University and a residency in internal medicine and fellowship in hematology/oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, part of Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Gaughan joined the University of Virginia in 2012 with a clinical focus on caring for patients with melanoma, head and neck cancer, and genitourinary malignancies. She is an active participant in the clinical trials process at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, and is interested in the education and training of residents and fellows.

Learning objectives: 

  1. Review mechanisms of action of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICPI) therapy and resulting toxicities.
  2. Understand patterns and expectations of checkpoint inhibition in cancer management.
  3. Identify opportunities for multidisciplinary input for successful management of both ICPI toxicity and cancer.
