For IM Residents, a Year-End “Chiefs” Grand Rounds, Awards and a Celebratory Dinner

Departing PGY3 Internal Medicine Residents gathered in the Rotunda for a farewell celebration on May 23, 2017.

Each May, internal medicine residents gather for a Medicine Grand Rounds given by that year’s chief residents and the presentation of annual awards voted upon by the residents. This event is followed by a photo session in front of the School of Medicine, with all DOM trainees (residents and fellows) and faculty invited to participate.

The next week, a ceremony and dinner at the Rotunda is held for “graduating” third-year residents (they receive a certificate of program completion, rather than a diploma). It is also an occasion to recognize and thank the departing chief residents for their year of service and hard work.

This year’s “Chiefs” Grand Rounds was held on Wednesday, May 17th, with chief residents Ross Buerlein, Peter Liu, Erin McLoughlin and Annie Smith giving a joint talk on “Building Resiliency through Focused Efforts and Restructuring Current Service Line Models with an Educational Emphasis.” The chiefs also handed out the resident-selected awards, while Dr. Susan Kirk presented SOM’s Mulholland teaching award, and Dr. Evan Heald presented the Brodie Award, both of which are faculty-selected.

Below is a list of this year’s award winners, followed by a slide show with pictures from Grand Rounds and the residents’ dinner at the Rotunda. Congratulations to all!

**The Dunn award is given to a graduating resident for excellence in medical care (peer-selected).
*** The Brodie award is given to a graduating resident for excellence in education and the practice of primary and ambulatory care (faculty-selected).
