Learning objectives: 

  • Define burnout and discuss its significance during residency
  • Review UVA burnout rates compared to national data
  • Review interventions to address burnout nationally and within UVA internal medicine residency
  • Discuss implementation of innovative conference styles to enhance resident education
  • Review recent changes to the infrastructure of the inpatient hematology/oncology service
  • Describe the impact of these changes on correcting pre-existing issues and duty hour violations
  • Discuss the recent and future changes to the structure of the general medicine service
  • Discuss the creation of a multidisciplinary community outreach program
