Amy Mathers is “On a Roll”…
Associate Professor of Medicine and Pathology Amy Mathers gave a presentation on “Leveraging clinical microbiology results in the management of resistant gram-negative infections” at the Greater Washington Infectious Diseases Society’s annual spring symposium, held on March 11 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Also presenting at the meeting was eminent AIDS researcher and director of the NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci, who spoke on the Zika virus.Division chief Bill Petri commented that Dr. Mathers, who serves as medical director for antimicrobial stewardship at UVA Hospital, has “been on a roll: following the [February publication of her paper on hospital sinks as sources of MDR bacteria], she was interviewed by the Canadian Broadcast Company, and Science magazine also picked up on the story. She also spoke at Oxford University in March at a genomics debate. Then she co-chairs a symposium on “Metagenomics in the Diagnostic Laboratory,” and will give a talk on plasmid analysis, at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) in Vienna at the end of April. Wow!”
… And so is Chief Bill Petri!
Bill Petri is on something of a roll himself: in addition to being named a UVA Distinguished Scientist in October 2016 and a 2017 Virginia Outstanding Scientist by Governor McAuliffe in February, he was appointed to chair the World Health Organization’s Polio Research Committee in March — clearly a great honor and a recognition of his international stature and contributions in this field.
According to its website, the “Polio Research Committee, established in 2008, provides guidance on the overall strategic direction of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s global programme of research, which encompasses dozens of projects from a wide range of core scientific disciplines.”Dr. Petri received official word from WHO Director of Polio Eradication Michel Zaffran, and will take up his duties this May. Congratulations Bill!

The division’s annual ID and Biodefense Research Day, which provides an opportunity for ID’s postgraduate trainees to shine, was held on March 13th and featured a keynote address by Dr. Joanne Engel, chief of the ID division at UC San Francisco, as well as many great oral and poster presentations.
