Match Day Yields Impressive Crop of New Interns

Welcome to the incoming class of internal medicine interns!

Match Day for the Department of Medicine’s Internal Medicine Residency program was conducted on Friday, March 17, and yielded a group of “academically successful individuals from across the country,” according to vice program director Brian Uthlaut, MD. “We were delighted to find that we matched a more diverse class,” he added.

At UVA, interns are accepted into four tracks: categorical (the largest group), most of whom will continue on in the internal medicine residency program; preliminary, a group that goes on to residencies in other fields, such as anesthesiology; primary care; and neurology. (The latter two fields each require a year of training in internal medicine before specialization.)

The new class of interns — 30 in the categorical track, six each in the preliminary and neurology tracks, and three in the primary care track — will begin training in June 2017. Four of the incoming categorical interns and one of the preliminary interns are coming into the program from the UVA School of Medicine. Other medical schools represented in the new class include VCU (3), Thomas Jefferson (2), U. Mississippi (2), U. Illinois (2), U. Michigan, U. Pittsburgh, West Virginia U., George Washington U., Wake Forest U., Boston U., U. South Carolina, Wright State U., U. Rochester, U. Tennessee, Penn State U., Case Western U., Virginia Tech, U. Texas-San Antonio, Michigan State U., New York Medical College, East Carolina State U., U. Arkansas, SUNY-Downstate, SUNY-Upstate, Drexel U., U. Maryland, UNC-Chapel Hill, Augusta U. (Medical College of Georgia).

Dr. Uthlaut extended his thanks to faculty members on the intern selection committee, who screened more than 1800 applications, as well as the many faculty and fellows who assisted in interviews. Uthlaut also recognized the Education administrative team, which “ran a smooth process before and during interview days,” and current residents for their commitment to making time for applicants on interview days. “They are always our best advertisement for the training program!”

And finally: “Thanks to our outstanding chief residents for their tireless work and energy in this intern recruitment season.”
