Welcome Back to Medicine Matters!

Mitch5-edit

After a short hiatus, Medicine Matters returns. Our goal is to share Department-wide programs, celebrate successes and the people who make our Department great.

As we move into the spring, the focus of the central administrative team is the preparation of our FY 2018 budget. This is no small task, given the size and breadth of our department. We have revenues in excess of $110 million; to put this in perspective, in the U.S. there are about 26,000 businesses of this size or greater, according to the IRS.

While clinical activity is the single greatest driver of our budget, our research activity is a close second, with revenues of nearly $40 million. In terms of faculty effort, about 60% is dedicated to clinical work — typical for most large academic departments of medicine.

Once the budget process is completed, we will send out a summary with major highlights, and will be happy to answer questions or discuss it in more detail.

It is amazing and gratifying to see our growth over the past five years. I thank all of you for your contributions that have made that growth possible, as well as our partners in the School of Medicine, Medical Center and UPG for their support.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Medicine Matters, and take some time to congratulate each other for the outstanding work we are doing every day.
