A High Calling

Mitch5-edit

As we come to the end of another year, my thanks go out to each of you for your contributions to the mission of the Department of Medicine.

In order to get our jobs done, we tend to be focused on what is right in front of us. But every so often it’s good to step back and remember the big picture, and the amazing enterprise of which we are all a part.

The Department of Medicine is unique for the scope of its mission and the range of clinical disciplines it encompasses. With ten subspecialty divisions, we are the largest department at UVA, and we run the biggest residency program in the School of Medicine. We also account for about a third of the research dollars in SOM overall, and have the most faculty members. To keep this large and complex entity running smoothly takes an enormous amount of coordinated and dedicated work from our staff, faculty and fellows.

We have a high calling, one that we all can be proud of: caring for patients, teaching students, and serving the common good through research that expands our scientific and clinical knowledge. Each of you plays a vital role in carrying out that mission.

Take time to celebrate your accomplishments and those of your colleagues, as we look forward to the year to come.

With best wishes for a happy and healthy new year,

MitchSig
